Frans Zwartjes
Highly stylised, sexually charged and imbued with the gothic, the films of Dutch underground experimentalist Frans Zwartjes (named 'the most important experimental filmmaker of his generation' by Susan Sontag) pack a punch, evoking the powerful understatement of Buster Keaton while channelling the free-form, happening theatrics of 1960s counter-culture. Included in tonight's unmissable showcase are Medea, the Dutch master's strident, confrontational take on the Euripides tragedy, and Living, which transforms barren domestic space into an existential zone for the dramatic.

Many thanks to producer, archivist and curator Stanley Schtinter for support in organizing the screening.
